Motion design doesn't come from software

It's a bit of a wild title but hear me out.

After reading an introductory chapter from Aaris Sherin's Introduction To Graphic Design, I'm sold on the idea that design doesn't come from software but from the designers creative/critical thinking.

She makes the point that design thinking is more important and nuanced that technical skills master...aka getting good at After Effects or Photoshop.

Developing my artist eye as a motion designer

As a result of this idea from Sherin, I theorise that I won't be able to develop an artist eye from traditional graphic design books but maybe from complimentary art books instead.

Sherin covers the fundamentals of graphic design, but I feel like Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is also valuable because it sharpens how you see.

I'm looking for skills that I won't find in books that directly teach graphic design or motion design.

I've got a few more books that I will read to help me learn motion design like Understanding Comics - a book about visual communication.

Conclusion

Motion designers sit at the intersection of film, comics, art, animation, and design. All different disciplines but somehow they overlap.

I look forward to sharing what else I discover on this journey.
