Day 1 of learning motion graphics

Day 1 of learning motion graphics
Fusion page on DaVinci Resolve

Today is Friday 10th July 2025. An exciting day to begin a new journey.

I'm publicly documenting my exploration into the world of motion graphics.

It's a bit random because I've never studied art to any high level and I've never seen myself as a potential graphic designer or motion graphic artist but here I am.

Guess I'll tell you about how I got here then?

Getting inheritance money from my dad

Unfortunately, my dad's parents passed and left him with some assets. He sold them and shared out money between me and my siblings, which I am forever grateful.

With my money, I bought some camera equipments because of a fixation on YouTube videos and film making. I fell down a rabbit hole of watching creators like Casey Neistat, Matt D'avella, and Ali Gallop and decided to make videos like them.

I went in...

I bought two C-stands, two Aputure lights, a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, a Focusrite Solo, a Shure MV7X, a Tascam DR-60DMKII...everything I need to start a production company.

After making a couple rough amateur cuts, I wanted to add visual effects to make my content more entertaining.

As can be expected, I jumped into another rabbit hole...

Noticing the shiny object syndrome?

A few scrolls and an app switch later, I got hit with an Instagram ad from Motion Science about their motion design course.

This triggered my curiosity, and before I knew it, I bought the course.

In my mind, visual effects and motion graphics are natural complements to storytelling...

This is the logical reason I used to justify my emotional purchase.

So that's why I'm here...

I made an emotional purchase and now I have to justify the buy by publicly documenting what I learn.

Software I'm using to build motion designs

My BMPCC 4K came with a studio version of DaVinci Resolve.

So it's only right that I use the software to learn motion graphics rather than After Effects because that would be an inefficient use of resources. Plus, Adobe is a monthly subscription while I own Resolve outright as a product.

The Motion Science course uses After Effects to teach but I will be reading Advanced Visual Effects in DaVinci Resolve 18 to figure out how I can translate the lessons I learn to Resolve.

And VO's will be recorded on Ableton Lite, which came free with my Focusrite.

Conclusion

Don't make random impulse purchases from Instagram ads. They'll lead you to a hobby you never knew existed a few scrolls ago 😄
